There was an NATA before the current NATA.
The original National Athletic Trainers' Association was formed in 1938. The formation was spearheaded by Bill Frey, of Iowa, with the assistance of Chuck Cramer. Mike Chambers was the first President of the Association. Photos of the Presidents of the original NATA can be found here. A list of other officers and Trustees can be found here.
It was a small operation, being formed during the Great Depression. While the Depression certainly did not help the association, World War II will see the end of the group. It ceased operations in 1944. Many of the officers and members were just too busy with war related duties.
They did have some successes. The most notable of which was the production of the Trainers Journal, as part of the Athletic Journal. The organizational mistakes that they made would help guide the current NATA during its formation.
